Because
we
rented an apartment with a kitchen in Cefalu, we scouted around for various
grocery stores to find foods that we could take home and make some tasty meals.
Well, Sicilians love their
high quality food, and not far from where we were staying was this massive
grocery - even more varied than Lidl
- where one could literally get lost.
Everything you could think
of, and in all categories were piled high in each section.
The entrance to Gourmet Deco
Nestled right into the neighborhood, locals
came here to shop for all their gourmet needs.
There is a reason this is called Gourmet
Deco.
Map of Gourmet Deco location
You can see from this map that this grocery
store is not a long walk from our apartment.
The Salumeria section
Meats, meats, meats, packaged or
ready-to-be-sliced.
There are countless choices here as you can
see.
Everything is well marked and the area is
kept very clean.
Sauces in jars, wine pairing suggestions,
cheeses to accompany your purchase... they think of it all.
The display is beautiful!
Cheese case
Mind you, this is simply one case of cheese.
Practically any option, hard, soft, creamy,
grate-able, spreadable, chunk-able and slice-able.
The marinated deli section
Of course, you will find olives here, and
marinated mushrooms of different sorts.
There are also sardines, artichoke hearts,
chilis, sun-dried tomatoes, and combinations of vegetables ready for placing on
salads, breads or crackers.
Prices are marked in Euros per kilo.
Pasta in a package
Don't have time to make pasta at home?
Here you can purchase freshly made pastas of
different shapes stuffed with cheese, mushrooms, prosciutto or spinach.
Toss into boiling water for 3 minutes and
ECCO! Your meal is ready.
Another cheese section
This selection of cheeses shows Camembert,
Italian Brie, Blue cheeses from different countries and a Formaggio Pesto (the
green cheese in the center left).
This could be a pesto-infused Gouda or it
could be a softer style of cheese that is spreadable.
Pizzas, calzones, and loaves
In Italy, bread is truly the staff of life.
Rarely is a meal served without bread, and
even leftover breads are made into
desserts
and salads.
This photo shows
square
pizzas (cut and weighed by the portion), calzones, assorted loaves and on
the left, croutons in a plastic box.
Assorted breads
This photo shows you buns, loaves, baguettes,
cookies made with the bitter Amari, breadsticks and sandwich loaves.
In this store, you could not want for
anything.
There were differing flours, shapes and types
of crusts.
Even more breads
Originally, the round breads in the center
back were made specifically for those taking a long journey. The hard crust kept
the bread soft and fresh inside and could withstand weeks of traveling.
You have multi-cereal breads in the front on
the right, sesame topped buns and a sort of rolled crescent shaped style on the
left front basket.
With all this selection a white, spongy
"Wonder Bread" could not be found anywhere.
The wine cellar
"Cantina" in Italian translates to cellar.
This was also an extensive area from which to
choose international wines, with a further collection against the wall at the
left of the photo.
One could spend hours in this store!
Champagnes, sparklies and beers on the right
in the cool case.
Packaged sliced cured meats
Italy is famous for its cured meats -
salamis, Prosciuttos, hams, Mortadellas...
Here you can find a package or a flavor to
suit your taste or occasion.
Fishmonger
And now the seafood area.
Fresh catch are displayed on thick ice, and
you can find... well, everything.
Whole fish, sliced fish, fish roe, and fish
steaks.
Shellfish were at another counter.
Oysters, mussels, clams, periwinkles... you
name it.
What a delight.
A quick antipasti plate at home
Well, it was hard not to buy up the store,
that's for sure.
Here's a plate we put together quickly from all the selections available.
We had seasoned Virgin Olive oil, fresh bread
to dip into it and sweet fruit to contrast the saltiness of the meat and
cheeses. A bottle of
Sicilian red wine and what more could one want?
Life is good!
If you are in Cefalu, make a special stop to
this deluxe grocery, and do it up Sicilian style!
